Election 2010
Municipal Election
2010 is an election year for municipalities in Ontario for the 4 year council term from 2010 to 2014. One Reeve and four councillors are to be elected.
Some key dates:
January 4, 2010 - Nominations open 9 AM
September 10, 2010 - Nominations close at 2 PM
September 15, 2010 - Additional nominations to be received between 9 AM and 2 PM if required.
October 14, 2010 - Advance Voting Day 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM (tentative)
October 25, 2010 - Voting Day 10 AM to 8 PM
Qualification: A candidate for municipal office must, upon nomination, be a qualified municipal elector and fulfill all of the following requirements:
- a resident of the municipality, a non-resident owner or tenant of land in the municipality or the spouse of such non-resident owner or tenant;
- a Canadian citizen;
- at least 18 years old;
- not legally prohibited from voting; and
- not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office.
NOTE: A candidate, if nominated, must remain qualified throughout the election and, if elected, throughout the term of office.
It is the responsibility of the candidate to determine whether he or she is qualified to be elected and hold office.
Nomination Paper (Form 1) [MS Word Format] [PDF Format] - this form must be filed in person by the candidate or by an agent. The nomination paper must have original signatures and cannot be faxed, mailed or emailed. Either the candidate or the agent must bring the completed and signed nomination papers to the office of the clerk. The candidate will be required to show proof of identity and qualifications (i.e. driver's license). The prescribed nomination filing fee of $200 for Head of Council and $100 for Councillor must be paid by cash, money order or certified cheque at the time of filing the nomination.
Declaration of Qualifications - this form must be filed at the same time as the Nomination Paper
Consent to Release of Personal Information - this form must be filed at the same time as the Nomination Paper
NOTE: A candidate is entitled to a refund of the filing fee if he or she is elected; receives more than two per cent of the votes cast for the office; or withdraws the nomination before nomination day.
Withdrawal of Nomination - To withdraw from the election, a candidate must notify the clerk in writing no later than 2 PM on nomination day (Friday, September 10, 2010).

Candidate's Guide to Accessible Elections - This guide developed in partnership by the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerk and Treasurers of Ontario and the Accessibility Directorate of Ontario, provides Candidates with information on how to ensure that campaign activities are accessible to everyone.
Election Signs - The Township does not have a by-law respecting the placement of election signs along municipal roads, but does request that all election signs be removed within 3 days after the election. No election signs are allowed in or on the property, or along the roadway in front of and across from the voting location (Gillies Community Centre) on the day of the advance and regular votes. The Ministry of Transportation does have a policy respecting the placement of election signs along provincial highways.

Election Candidate Information Session
Anyone interested in running or is already registered for office in the 2010 Municipal election is encouraged to attend this session being held by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
Meet the Candidates Night
The Gillies Community Centre is hosting a "Meet the Candidates Night" where candidates can speak to the electors. If you are a candidate please sign up for this session. If you are a voter, you will want to attend this session to listen to the candidates speak and to have your questions answered.

Proxy Voting
An elector in a municipality may appoint another person similarly qualified as an elector as his or her voting proxy. A person cannot appoint more than one voting proxy or act as a voting proxy for more than one other person, unless the proxy is the person's spouse, sibling, parent, child, grandparent or grandchild of the proxy. The Appointment for Voting Proxy Form [MS Word] [PDF] must be completed and submitted to the Clerk in person by the elector beginning September 13th until Election Day.
