Building Permits

The interior renovation season is upon us.  It is important to obtain a building permit for any structural changes that you may be making inside your house.  Examples are renovating a bathroom, changing a furnace (especially from different heating types such as oil to propane), and adding or changing interior walls.

People usualy don't worry about getting a building permit for interior renovations because it is not obvious on the outside.  However, when it comes time to add up the value of your home for your insurance company, you may be asked to provide a final inspection approval from the municipality and this may be extremely difficult to do, as the various inspection stages have been covered over.

Also, if anything happens to your home and it is necessary to claim through your home insurance policy and it is discovered that there have been recent renovations that have not been properly inspected, your insurance coverage could become null.  If in doubt, call the Office or the Building Inspector for more information.
